Recently an old man approached me and yelled “DO YOU. SPEAK. ENGLISH?”

I answered “FLUENT. LY.”

He laughed, but now he’s got me worried that I’m dressing far too European.

Um. Don’t most people in Ireland speak English? Regardless of whether they “dress European” or not?

Not necessarily anymore. We were in a particularly “non Irish” area of the city as well, so that probably didn’t help him any..

My husband is Irish and moved here to St. Louis after we started dating and at least once a week someone says to him, “your English is very good.” And it’s usually very loud when it’s said! Uh, Thanks!
