I’m not talking “feel good” films here, I’m talking “feel better” films. That is, films so unchallenging and awful that they make you feel better just watching them. I’ve been turning to these with annoying frequency lately so I figured I should share some of my all time favourites.
5. 30 Days of Night. This one is a relative newcomer to the list, added only after I had to make good on a declaration that I’d watch anything starring Josh Hartnett. “Starring” might be stretching it a bit, but the plot of a small Alaskan town fighting off invading vampires during – you guessed it – 30 days of night was just horrifying. And not in a scary movie way.
4. Center Stage. Bulimic ballerinas. Dead mothers. Statutory rapist male dancers. This film’s got it all. And remember, life doesn’t hold try-outs.
3. Hackers. I’ve loved this film ever since it wormed it’s weird little way to our movie store in Singapore. I’ll watch Crash and Burn even when they don’t start until 2am and have subtitles. Seriously, their only crime was curiosity.
2. Empire Records. Where to start with the badness-but-goodness? Shock me shock me shock me with that deviant behaviour.
1. Red Dawn. Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen and Jennifer Grey saving the American heartland from a Soviet invasion from their hiding-out headquarters in the Rockies. So bad, but so, so good.
Numbers 2 and 4 are two of my favorite movies ever. Especially when in Centerstage she goes to the Bad Ass Dance Studio and her crush walks in and there is that dude on the floor doing high kicks and I’m pretty sure he kicks himself in the head. Awesome.
Oh my friend I have them both on DVD!
I love Hackers! Especially as it was a movie ahead of its time. Plus Jonny Lee Miller isn’t bad to look at.
I’d also recommend the entire “Bring It On” series (bring it on 2 – it’s already been brough, and then bring it on again – who’s bringing the salsa, not sure about the exact title on the last one). I’ve been fortunate enough to catch the entire trilogy on ABC family more than once.
What about hope floats???? or officer and a gentlemen! aren’t those your favs??
oh wait, think before you speak, read again before you comment!! sorry misread your first line.
Empire records was always one of your faves….
Red Dawn – what can I say? It just brings me back to the good old days (80’s) of worrying about Russia, seriously fearing nuclear attack, and thinking Patrick Swayze was totally hot! Not sure which was scarier
