I went and did it. I finally caved in and joined that newfangled Facebook thing that all the kids are talking about.
3 day old review?
Ehh.
I like looking at the pictures of old friends, and I enjoy the bite-size updates on where they are and what they are doing, but other than that I’m wondering if I will use it for much else. Messages sent to me there, which are then passed on to me in email, will continue to be answered in email. I doubt I’ll be signing in to update my status. I can see that this will become another one hour per week check-in kind of site for me.
And I feel weird about that.
Everyone raves about Facebook. The day I joined up I got loads of messages telling me that I’d never be the same and I’d never get work done and I’d joined the dark side. People tell me all the time that they find job leads and make party plans and god knows what else. There even seems to be whole virtual activities on there, like sending hugs and coffees and snowballs.
I feel like I’m missing something.
you clearly just have been poked yet
Well, I’ll be the first to say that I have yet to take part in any of this ridiculous poking or (even lamer) super-poking or passing around of virtual cocktails or throwing of virtual snowballs or planting something in my virtual “lil green patch”. Gag.
But I’m still addicted to FB. I a totally healthy and not-at-all mind-numbing way of course…
I felt like that in beginning as well and then suddenly you realize it’s 4am and you’re still on Facebook chatting with someone in Ireland, making fun of your brother’s silly pictures, and responding the the people from elementary school that just found you. It’s a tangled web.
Yeah, I don’t go on it more than twice a week for about ten minutes. I do like the access to friends, and seeing photos, but other than that…
You should note that if you want to, you may “ignore” just about everything you don’t have interest in. You’ll get a whole helluva lot of virtual things that will have you scratching your head.
What you don’t mean that you won’t be updating your status every 10 min like some people i.e. “Sally is going to the supermarket. Sally is driving her kids to school. Sally is on the toilet.”
Only kidding. I think it’s crazy how some people write everything that they do all the time.
Anyways, it’s a great tool to reconnect with old friends and find long-lost ones. Probably best that you’re not entirely impressed with it ’cause it can really suck a lot of time from you.
I only use the Scrabble application on Facebook now, and THAT is addictive, I tell you!
Oh, the continual updates annoy me to no end! One I saw this morning was “X is drinking a latte.” Do I care? In a word, no.
But I agree with Shari — it is neat to be able to reconnect with people and check out their photos to see what they’re up to now….
wait for it….. waaaaait for it………..wait…for….it.
Oh just wait until I throw a sheep at you! (seriously when I joined I was like, “what does that mean?!”) I have mixed feelings – on some level I feel like I’m messing with god because I’m “reconnecting” with people that I think I “disconnected” with (or never connected with in the first place) for a reason! But today I became a fan of Aretha Franklin’s inauguration hat, and that made me happy.
I’m addicted to the word games – Scrabble, Lexulous, Scramble, Word Twist, Word Challenge, Wordscraper, Letters Cube, Pathwords…
Also, whenever I post a new blog entry, I post the link on Facebook, which lets all of my friends know. It’s a great way to increase your blog readership.
There are all sorts of groups you can join. Many of them are just silly, but there are also writers’ group, political groups, medical issues groups (I bet you could find a myasthenia group on there), and so on.
It can be a huge time suck if you let it, but it can also be a useful tool as well.
But then you get to do silly things like poking fun of each other’s photos in a weird chat-like way and you realize how much perfectly good time you’ve wasted laughing your ass off over nothing
Snap! (Oh wait, did I just date myself? Yes, I DID grow up in the 80’s).
Ok, very valid points there Greek chorus!
Haha…I know exactly who Laura was referring to when she mentioned the “drinking a latte” update.
I think that you’re doing pretty well for a facebook “newbie”. Is that really over 100 friends I see on your page? Well done!
YAY! I’m finally glad you joined!
